Hi StarrPrendergast,
Sorry that I forgot some information in my previous post. Now, I edit and re-post the post.
==========================
How do you sync on-premise AD users to Office 365? Do you use the DirSync tool which is downloaded from Office 365 admin portal?
Currently, to match “In Cloud” Office 365 users to AD users, the officially supported way is to do a SMTP match (soft match). For detailed steps, please see this KB article: support2.microsoft.com/.../2641663. After that, the “In Cloud” users will become “Synced with AD” users.
However, the prerequisite is that: SMTP matching can be run only on user accounts that have a Microsoft Exchange Online email address, as mentioned in that KB article. If the Office 365 user doesn’t have an email address, we cannot use SMTP match.
If SMTP match (soft match) is not feasible, we can also choose hard match. For detailed steps, please see: blogs.technet.com/.../how-to-do-hard-match-in-dirsync.aspx. Based on my test, hard match is a little bit complicated.
If you’re not using the DirSync tool, which sync tool do you use? Could you please provide related screenshots of your sync tool for analysis?
As the screenshot contain your personal information, to protect your privacy, I have sent a private message to request it (Click Private messages on the right side of the community site). In the private message, you can click the insert image button to post a screenshot.
