Hi Kent,
Can you please let us know how did you set the proxyAddress filed in the on-premises AD, via Exchange Admin Center or using ADSI Edit? Also, does the modified SMTP address looks like user@domain.onmicrosoft.com or user@domain.com?
Generally, if you try to modify the SMTP address like user@domain.onmicrosoft.com and sync the changes to Office 365, it will fail and you can check the detailed cause by referring to this thread: http://community.office365.com/en-us/f/613/t/194067.aspx.
However, if you’re modifying the user@domain.com and the changes are not synced, I’d like to collect the following information so that we can understand the issue more clearly:
- If you modify the other attributes for the on-premises user or modify the same attribute for other users, does the sync work?
- Do you see any error messages in the event logs on the DirSync server? To find the log, please refer to the steps below:
- On the DirSync server, open the system event viewer.
- Expand the “Windows Logs”, right click on the “Application” and click “Create Custom Views…”.
- In the custom view properties window, select “Critical, Warning, Error” in the “Event level”. Select “By source” and multiple select the sources “ADSync, Directory Synchronization, Directory-Services-SAM, DirectorySyncClientCmd, Forefront Identity Manager Synchronization, Windows Azure Active Directory Sync Service”, click “OK” to create the custom view.
- A new view will be listed in the left bar, select it and check if there are any logs in the view.
- You can then select the log and check the details in the General tab. Please then copy the event ID and the detailed error message, and post them back here in the PM for further checking.
